The origin of the National Day of the People’s Republic of China

“Guoqing” (国庆, literally, national celebration), originally referring to the happy events of a nation, first appeared in the Western Jin Dynasty. In ancient China, the enthronement and birthday of an emperor was called “Guoqing”, while today, it is referred to the commemoration day of the foundation of a nation. In September 1949, the first session of the first CPPCC declared October 1 the National Day of People’s Republic of China. On October 1, 1949, the People’s Republic of China was announced to be founded, which was a milestone of Chinese history. At 3 PM on October 1, 1949, 300,000 people attended the grand ceremony at the Tian’anmen Square, celebrating the foundation of the Central People’s Government of the People’s Republic of China. Chairman Mao Zedong solemnly declared the foundation of People’s Republic of China as well as the Central People’s Government, and raised the first Five-Star Red Flag on his own.

National Day

Once it becomes a new and civil celebration, national day, the special commemoration way of a nation, bears the function of reflecting the cohesive force of the nation and the people. Meanwhile, the large scale celebration activities on the National Day also become the specific embodiment of the government’s administrative force. Strengthening national confidence, displaying cohesive force, and exerting rallying force are the three basic features of the National Day celebration.
