- For the people of modern times, Huizhou is an ancient geographic concept. Originally named Xin'an or Shezhou, it was renamed Huizhou in 1121 and kept the same name during the Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties, governing "one prefecture and six counties" (apart from Wuyuan which belongs to Jiangxi, other areas are all governed by today's Anhui Province). In the first year of the Republic of China (1912), the region was abolished as a prefectural administrative region and set as a county. Since then Huizhou has no longer existed as a geographic concept. The ancient Huizhou is known for its prosperous culture and numerous talents. Especially during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the rising of Huizhou merchants greatly promoted the development of local culture. The "Hui studies" which focuses on the study of Huizhou's history and culture has become the third largest local studies after "Dunhuang studies" and "Tibetology".
