Round coins are round currency molded during the middle Warring States Period by the State of Wei. The coins were easy to carry along since there was a hole in the middle. Later, this shape was imitated by other states of the time, thus becoming the origin of square-holed money in later dynasties. Copper cowries are the earliest bronze mint in the shape of oval cowries. They are divided into two types, one with patterns and the other without. The former type was mainly in use during the late Shang Dynasty and the Spring and Autumn and Warring States Periods, while the latter, also called Grimace Money, was built by the State of Chu during the Spring and Autumn and Warring States Periods with wide influences. |
