The bulu is a traditional sport of the Mongolian ethnic group popular in eastern Inner Mongolia and Qian Gorlos Mongolian Autonomous County in Jilin.

Made of wood, a bulu used to be a hunting tool. It is about 50 centimeters long, 6 centimeters wide and 1.5 centimeters thick. It has a curve at one end, similar to a sickle, with the top wrapped in lead. It weighs about 375 grams.

There are two types of the bulu game. In one type called
far-throw", players compete to throw the bulu as far as they could; in another named "accurate-throw", they compete to hit a target with the bulu as accurately as possible. Generally, one can throw it as far as 100 meters.

In the "accurate-throw", three round wooden pillars are erected on the ground as targets, with each one being 50 centimeters in height, 4 centimeters in top diameter and 6 centimeters in bottom diameter. The pillars are placed 10 centimeters apart. Generally, the player hurls at a distance of 30 meters. Once the targets are hit, scores are gained according to the rule.

In either game, each player throws a maximum of three times and the three throws should be completed within 30 seconds. There are no set rules on the pitching posture. The rank is determined according to the each player’s best performance of the three times.

The bulu game is an official item of the Nadam Fair in Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region.
