This style of folding armchair appeared as early as the Song Dynasty. A curved back was popular in folding armchairs of the Ming Dynasty. The austere shape and concordant proportions imbued this armchair with both artistic beauty and pragmatic value. The back has three openwork designs. The upper is interlaced with a hornless dragon, the middle with Chinese unicorn, rock and magic fungus designs, and the under part with a complex scroll design. The armrest and joints are all clothed and clinched with copper ornaments that add to its firmness. It was likely made in the second half of the Ming Dynasty.
