Qingdao is on the bank of the Yellow Sea at the southern tip of the Shandong Peninsula. The name “Qingdao” originally referred to Xiao Qingdao or “Little Qingdao Isle” (also known as “Qindao”). Literally meaning “Green Island”, “Qingdao” got its name due to the green mountains and lush trees on the island. According to historical documents found so far, the earliest record of the name was in the mid-Ming Dynasty some 400 years ago.
