Qingdao is on the bank of the Yellow Sea at the southern tip of the Shandong Peninsula. The name “Qingdao” originally referred to Xiao Qingdao or “Little Qingdao Isle” (also known as “Qindao”). Literally meaning “Green Island”, “Qingdao” got its name due to the green mountains and lush trees on the island. According to historical documents found so far, the earliest record of the name was in the mid-Ming Dynasty some 400 years ago. Surrounded by sea on three sides, Qingdao is a unique seaside city with mountainous scenes, gorgeous landscape and mild weather. Beautiful scenery along the coastal line, spectacular divine Laoshan Mountain, red-tiled buildings, green trees, cityscape with the blue sea and sky, typical continental-style buildings of various countries, celebrities’ former residences of historical and cultural richness, and modern tourist facilities are combined to make Qingdao a beautiful seaside scenic area and a hot tourist destination in China. Dubbed “China’s Capital of Sailing”, Qingdao has been selected as the regatta venue of the 29th Olympic Games in Beijing. |
