Built between 1703 and 1792 AD, the Mountain Resort of Chengde is located in Hebei Province of China. It is comprised of imperial palaces, royal gardens and temples.

The construction of the Mountain Resort of Chengde is based on the natural landscape and rustic charm and the overall layout of the resort is made up of the Southeast Lake Zone, Northwest Mountain Zone and the Northeast Grassland, just like a miniature of Chinese territory. In the south end of the resort lies the palace area, where Emperor Kangxi and Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty would spend half a year annually dealing with important political, military, ethnic and diplomatic affairs.

In the scenic area, all buildings are modeled after the beauty spots in the south of the Yangtze River. Take the "Misty Rain Tower" for example, the building is after the tower of the same name in Jiaxing of Zhejiang Province; and The Golden Hill in the Imperial Summer Resort is built following the example of Jinshan Temlple (Golden Hill Temple) of Zhenjiang in Jiangsu Province. In the bumpy hilly sections east and north of the resort, there are twelve magnificent and brightly-colored lamaseries surrounding the area like a myriad of stars surrounding the moon. These lamaseries are collectively called "Outer Eight Temples", combining the Han, Mongolian, and Tibetan architectural styles. In 1994, the resort with its outer temples was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The landscape architecture within the lake zone is mostly built in imitation of famous architectures in Jiangnan (the lower reach of the Yangtze River).
