By Gao Xian
Tang Dynasty
Handscroll, Cursive Script, Ink on paper
Length: 30.8cm, Width: 311.3cm

Gao Xian was born in Wucheng(present-day Huzhou, Zhejiang Province) and was an eminent monk who was renowned for cursive script during the mid-Tang Dynasty. Thousand-Character Reader's author was Zhou Xingsi of the Liang Period in the Southern Dynasties. This work written by Gao Xian, though only 243 characters left and the other 757 characters lost for a long period, is the only authentic work of his and represented the calligraphic achievement of the mid-Tang Dynasty. A charming vitality prevails in its particularly free and spontaneous brushstrokes.
