New artistic conceptions and techniques came forth continuously in the middle and later periods. The style which stressed the author's spiritual pursuit and individual sentiment gradually came into being, represented by the Four Masters of the Song Dynasty, Su Shi, Huang Tingjian, Mi Fu and Cai Xiang.
