Han Yu's Preface to Seeing Li Yuan off to Pangu |
Enthusiastically modeling after the ancient masters was the mainstream of Yuan Dynasty calligraphy, which actually suffocated creation. The leading role in calligraphy of Yuan was played by Zhao Mengfu, who was versed in almost all styles: seal script, official script, regular script, running script and cursive script. The Zhao style he created is one of the Four Styles of Chinese Calligraphy, the others being Ou style, Yan style and Liu style. They all exerted great influence over the following generations. |
