Ink and color on silk

This painting depicts the traveling party of Khitan Khan of 41 persons and 27 steeds taking a rest. At right warriors and their saddled mounts in the foreground take a rest standing; at left, in greater depth, the Khan and his wife sitting on a rug take refreshments and watch a dance accompanied by music. The pageantry of people and horses is layered with gradated depths in a break with the tradition of the flat, two-dimensional composition of the past.
