Five Dynasties
Ink and color on silk
62.1*32.7cm

On the snow-covered bank of a stream, an angler rises regretfully to his feet and prepares to go home. The snow on his bamboo hat and cape is an indication of his lengthy but empty-handed wait. The elegant dress peeking from beneath the cape gives him away as someone who doesn't depend on fishing for a living The bitter cold has scared away even the fish. Note the mogu (boneless) technique used to model the bamboos in this painting, admittedly not quite successfully; the technique eventually contributed to the evolution of a major genre in Chinese painting - bamboo painting.
