Qian Xuan, Song Dynasty
Ink and color on paper
38*316.7cm

This painting on a handscroll depicts the three motifs of a blue oriole in the green peach tree, peony with its green foliage and pink plum blossoms. The three sections are divided, or connected, by inscriptions that enunciate the artistic intent. Throughout the painting, thin, light ink lines are employed with no loss in structural strength; the coloring is restrained and elegant yet luminous, and the calligraphy used for the inscription is flavorful.
