Wang Mian, Yuan Dynasty
Ink on paper
68*26cm

Wang Mian specialized in plum painting. In contrast to traditional plum trees with sparse branches and few blossoms, his plum trees are exuberant growths with a mass of flowers, pioneering the dense style of plum painting. The upper section of this painting shows half a plum tree with its blossoms cascading down; the lower section is filled with dense lines of verse. A thin twig sweeps down toward the middle, bridging the two parts. The effect is one of a sea of plum blossoms heralding spring. Wang Mian rightfully earned his title of the guru of ink plum painting.
