Shi Tao, Qing Dynasty
Ink on paper
114.3*46.7cm

According to the inscription on the right, the focal point of the work is actually a pot of chrysanthemum. The excited painter not only hid the pot, which can be difficult to place on the paper, but also added bamboo, elegant stones and long grass, at which he was most skillful in painting - these additions make the picture more interesting. The withered and the wet, the thick and the light, the real and the actual, the sparse and the dense - all, while looking casual, are playing freely on the paper. The painter loved plants suggesting grace, character and morality in the ancient culture. One can be freed from worldly concerns, forgetting worries, by simply gazing at them all day long.
