Shen Quan, Qing Dynasty
Ink and color on silk
233*133.2cm

This is a large-scale, naturalistic painting done with the minute and laborious technique. Although it depicts only a corner of a lotus pond, the dozens of lotus flowers shown in various stages of bloom draw the viewer into a sea of lotus flowers and inspire a sense of glory and stately elegance. Above the flowers a pair of wagtails chitchat in flight; beneath the flowers a pair of mandarin ducks bill and coo. Nothing is more valuable than this serene harmony. Three knots of lotus flowers tracing an S in the water give greater depth to the picture.
