The sheng is another ancient Chinese musical instrument that emits sound by the vibration of reed. It became very fashionable during the Zhou, as it played accompaniment for court singers and dancers. Then it found its way among commoners, and became a common instrument in singing concerts, temple fair celebrations and other events.

The sheng consists of three parts: reed, pipes and what is known as "douzi", and it can be used for accompaniment, solo performance and ensembles. Highly expressive and convenient for changing the tones, with clear and distinct high pitched and graceful middle and low pitches, the sheng is an indispensable instrument in a folk concerto of wind and percussion instruments.
