Coloured glazed porcelain is the vitreous enamel with intrinsic lustre which is produced by firing the clay with several metal oxides and natural ore as colorants at a high or low temperature.

The coloured glazed porcelain originates from the blue and yellow glazed porcelain in the Shang Dynasty. Through several dynasties, the blue and yellow glazed porcelain gradually developed into porcelain of multiple colours. Jun Red, Ji Red, Langyao Red, Eggplant purple and Lujun porcelain are the precious varieties of the coloured glazed porcelain.

During the Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties, Jingdezhen had developed into the porcelain-producing centre of China. Blue and white porcelain, colour painted porcelain and coloured glazed porcelain were three major porcelain products in Jingdezhen, among which the coloured glazed porcelain was most favoured by the imperial court. Many varieties of the porcelain were even monopolized by the imperial family. The porcelain enjoys a special advantage over other products.

Compared with porcelains such as blue and white porcelain and colour painted porcelain, coloured glazed porcelain is less artificially treated, therefore it displays more natural flavour. The porcelain substrate is pure and elegant, the colour red symbolizing passion, yellow luxury and nobility, blue tranquillity, purple mystery. The coloured glazed porcelain fully displays the connotation and elegance as contained in the traditional Chinese porcelain producing technique.
