Han Xin, born in Huaiyin (today's Jiangsu Province) and living in the end of Qin and beginning of Han, was one of the founding fathers of Western Han and a famous militarist in ancient China. Han Xin lived a poor life when he was young and was a constant retainer of the nobles. However, his character was uninhibited without ceremony. Once he met a young butcher, who jeered him in public that if Han wouldn't have the guts to stab him with a sword, he would have to get over under his thighs. Han was aware that he would face a penalty once he stabbed him, and chose to endure all the indignity and humiliation to do what he was asked to. After he accomplished his great undertaking, he showed great bosom to confer the same person who humiliated him a title and won a lot of praises from later generations. At the beginning Han Xin was a follower of Xiang Liang, upon whose death he went over to Xiang Yu and offered advice for many times without being adopted. Later, with his ability recognized by Xiao He, he was made a general by Liu Bang and contributed a lot in founding the Han Dynasty. He was then conferred the title of King of Chu. Han Xin was also famed as one of the "Three Standouts", together with Xiao He and Zhang Liang. |
