Born Li Chen (810 - 859), Emperor Xuanxong of the Tang Dynasty was the 13th son of Emperor Xianzong of the Tang Dynasty. He was in power for 13 years. Li Chen was a good emperor in Chinese history. He did his utmost to bring prosperity to the country by putting state affairs in order, making himself an example to others, accepting advice with an open mind, caring for the people, developing production, easing tax burdens, punishing corrupt officials, and striking separatist forces. Under his rule, the late Tang Dynasty enjoyed peace and stability for a period of time, which was historically called "Dazhong Political Situation" and Emperor Xuanzong was honored as "Junior Taizong". In the 13th year of the Dazhong Period (859), Emperor Xuanzong was poisoned due to taking elixirs. He never recovered from the illness and died at the age of 50. He was buried in the Zhenling Mausoleum. |
