Liu Ji (1311 - 1375), style name Bowen, was a key military consultant of Zhu Yuanzhang. Liu Bowen showed great intelligence and talents since childhood. Edified by his family, he was keen on learning and thinking; he liked reading, and was well acquainted with Confucian and other ancient Chinese classics in pre-Qin times; in particular, he dived into the research of astronomy, geography, military science, astrology etc, and learnt quite a lot from them. He had an extremely good memory, and was able to recite the content after reading it only once; he had a superb style of writing, his articles having uncommonly insight. Thanks to his innate gift and acquired diligence, young Liu Bowen soon stood out in his native town and became a celebrated talent and scholar in areas around Jiangsu and Zhejiang. Liu Bowen became a successful candidate of the imperial civil service examination in the late Yuan Dynasty. Later he abdicated his post and lived in recluse, and then he joined the insurgent army led by Zhu Yuanzhang. When the Ming Dynasty was founded, he was conferred as "Lord Chengyi". Although he retired after meritorious service as Fan Li (a famous historical figure during the Wu-Yue Contention in the Spring and Autumn Period) did, Liu Bowen still incurred suspicion from Zhu Yuanzhang and was later involved in a case and died from sorrow and indignation. |
