Xu Guangqi (1562 - 1633), a native of Songjiang (now Shanghai) in the Ming Dynasty, was a famous scientist, agronomist and also a representative of science school in the pragmatic trend of Ming and Qing Dynasties.

Xu Guangqi passed the imperial examination during Wanli Period of the Ming Dynasty and entered the Imperial Academy later. He had made important contributions in mathematics, astronomy, calendar, military, surveying, agriculture, water conservancy and so on, and often discussed Western science and technology with Matteo Ricci, an Italian missionary. Xu Guangqi was the first one to introduce advanced European scientific knowledge into China, and also a pioneer of China's modern science.

Xu Guangqi's representative works were Complete Treatise on Agriculture and Chonzhen Almanac, and he also translated books like Original Geometry, Water Law of Taixi and so on.
