Zhang Juzheng (1525 - 1582) was a famous statesman in the Ming Dynasty as well as a representative and leader of pragmatism of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. After Emperor Shenzong ascended the throne, Zhang Juzheng took up the post of prime minister and implemented a series of effective reform measures. He carried out the Single Whip Method and reformed the taxation system, which improved the financial situation of the Ming Government. Thanks to his recommendation, famous generals like Qi Jiguang and Li Chengliang were appointed to train soldiers, fortify the border defense in north and regulate border defense work. Pan Jixun was assigned to take charge of flood prevention work to bring the Yellow River and Huaihe River under control, which had also made some success. During the ten years of his being prime minister, the whole country was at peace and everything of government went on well. Zhang Juzheng died in 1582. He left behind his works like Collected Works of Zhang Taiyue, Explanation of Shu Jing, etc. |
