In the late Spring and Autumn Period, the Jin State was actually governed by six ministers. In 458 BC, there appeared the factions among them. Later, ministers surnamed Zhi, Han, Zhao and Wei joined their hands and rooted out the ministers surnamed Fan and Zhongxing. Five years later, Zhao, Han and Yan again made an alliance to get rid of the most powerful Zhi. During the reign of the Duke You of Jin, only the Xiajiang and Quwo belonged to him, with all other land being carved up by Zhao, Han and Wei. Therefore, the Duke of Jin actually depended on them. In 403 BC, King Weilie of Zhou officially conferred Zhao, Han and Wei vassals with the Jin State being wiped out. It is called "the carve-up of the Jin state by three ministers" in history. |
