Dong Zhuo was ruthless and presumptuous when he seized the imperial power. The vassals elected Yuan Shao as the leader of their ally and marched towards Luoyang to declare war against Dong Zhuo. Lv Bu was sent by Dong Zhuo to lead a force of 150,000 soldiers to guard the Hulao Pass outside Luoyang City, which was attacked by eight forces dispatched by Yuan Shao. At the foot of the Hulao Pass Lv Bu successively killed several generals of the enemy. At this moment Zhang Fei dashed forward, fighting against him for 50 rounds. Seeing that Zhang Fei had no chance to win Lv Bu, Guan Yu rode forward to assist him. Another 30 rounds passed and the two still could not win over Lv Bu. Then Liu Bei came up riding his yellow-bristle horse. The three brothers closed in, trying all their might to kill Lv Bu. This proved too much for Lv Bu, who had to break out the encirclement and fled back to the Hulao Pass.
