At the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty, the whole Chinese society was in great turbulence. The imperial court issued a proclamation to recruit men and buy horses. Liu Bei and Zhang Fei got to know each other when they watched the proclamation in Zhuoxian. They then came to a restaurant, talking merrily over cups. All of a sudden, a martial looking, handsome man with a huge build and a red complexion came into the restaurant, so they invited him to drink together. The man was Guan Yu. He left home for killing a bully out of justice and had been leading a vagrant life for a couple of years. The three had a pleasant talk. The next day in a peach garden they swore brotherhood to heaven and earth before lit candles and joss sticks. According to their age, Liu Bei was the eldest, Guan Yu the second and Zhang Fei the youngest. They vowed to be of one mind and devote themselves to the country. |
