Rain on the Plane Trees, another great work of Bai Pu, is a downright tragedy. This story, drawing materials from the long poem Song of Eternal Sorrow written by Bai Juyi, reflects the love tragedy of the emperor. Rain on the Plane Trees had its own features in creating tragic atmosphere. Particularly in Section Four of the script, Emperor Minghuang of Tang was missing his beloved late consort Yang Yuhuan, when the rain was falling on plane trees on an autumn night, which did have strong power to move people. The author applied poetic sentences to integrate the cold and bleak autumn night as well as the dull and lonely sound of rains with the sorrow and loneliness of the hero, which did achieve the effect of blending the scene with the emotion and combining object with human. |
