Qianlong period, Qing Dynasty The plate is shaped like a water chestnut and coated with red lacquer. Adorned with gold-painted motifs, the center of the plate is dedicated to a picture of a gorgeous scene featuring longevity stones, peach trees, peony flowers and four magpies that are flying in the sky or settling on the branches or the stones. The picture is encircled by labyrinth motifs traced in gold in the polished area. Colors applied in the picture include black, yellow and light green etc. The message carried in the picture is "longevity, wealth, happiness and good luck". The inside of the plate is adorned with gold-painted lotus motifs and the outside is adorned with intertwining branch motifs. The bottom of the plate is coated with black lacquer, with four gold-filled characters of "qian long nian zhi" (meaning "made during Emperor Qianlong's reign of the Qing Dynasty") in regular script chiseled in the middle. The plate is intricately painted with delicate brushwork, multiple colors and vivid motifs, serving as a paragon of the perfect combination between lacquer craftwork and painting skills. |
