Qing Dynasty The fork is made of gold, inlaid with rosewood handle. The place where the handle is fixed is chiseled with peony pattern, and the handle is inlaid with 48 "shou" (longevity) characters by gold and silver wires; the top is embedded with flower pattern carved out of white jade. The fork was one of the food vessels of the imperial palace. The decorations are mostly on top, usually inlaid with gold, silver, jade, wood, ivory, bone, enamel, etc. They are diverse in design, numerous in variety, and delicate in craftwork. The fork was an important ritual article of the emperor and empress. It can be presumed from the "shou" character that the fork was specially made for the birthday celebration of some emperor or empress. |
