Qianlong Period, Qing Dynasty The square Sumeru base is ringed with patterns of labyrinths, intertwining lotus branches and lotus petals formed by turquoises, lapis lazuli and red coral and inlaid with crystals, rubies etc. The surface of the base is adorned with turquoise and coral-inlaid intertwining lotus branches and fitted with turquoise railings, with the balusters inlaid with 12 pearls. The round pagoda base is decorated with lotus petals made of lapis lazuli and inlaid with turquoises at both ends, with various precious tones interspersing in the patterns. The pagoda itself is adorned with diamond-shaped grids all over, with turquoise patterns of "great fortune and longevity" inside. The shoulders of the pagoda are decorated with eight turquoise beast-face patterns and the bottom is decorated with lapis lazuli and coral- inlaid patterns of sea water, cliffs and treasures. There's a niche on the front side of the pagoda, with a lapis lazuli statue of Buddha inside. The door of the niche is inlaid with rubies, sapphires, tourmalines etc, with gold-inlaid white jade lotus petals adorning the entrance. There's a white jade horizontal board bearing the gold-traced inscriptions "wuliang shoufo zan" (meaning "Ode to Amitayus Buddha") by Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty above the niche door. Standing on a lotus flower-shaped base made of turquoise and lapis lazuli, the 13-storey pagoda finial is inlaid with rubies and sapphires, and interspersed with turquoise-embedded floral patterns. At the top of the pagoda, there's a gem-inlaid canopy, holding a sun made of a big ruby and a crescent moon inlaid with ten precious stones of various colors, with the flames decorated with turquoises. There's a big pearl inlaid on the top of the pagoda. This exquisite pagoda is a gold filigree work inlaid with pearls and precious stones, representing the handicraft level of the Qing Dynasty. |
