Kangxi Period, Qing Dynasty With a lion knob on top, the bell is ringed with a line of cloud head patterns and two lines of fret patterns. The top of the bell is adorned with fret patterns and the bottom is adorned with one-legged dragon patterns, with beast-face patterns in between. The bell is a ritual and musical instrument of ancient China. In the Qing Dynasty, a bell was in most cases placed beside a qing (sonorous stone), symbolizing auspiciousness. This bell used to be kept in Yongshou Hall (The Hall of Eternal Longevity) of the Forbidden City. |
