Tongzhi Period, Qing Dynasty Round bulgy belly, single horned, mouth and face on top of the head; the odd-shaped luduan is engraved with flame patterns on its legs. The inside walls bear inscriptions indicating its manufacturing year, material and weight. There's a rectangular Sumeru base with indented corners at the bottom. The luduan is an auspicious beast in ancient Chinese mythology. It is believed to be able to travel 18,000 li per day and to speak all languages. This luduan used to be placed in symmetry with another one beside the emperor's throne as an ornament. |
