Qianlong Period, Qing Dynasty The celestial globe is made up of the pedestal, the holder, the meridian circle, the horizontal circle, the equatorial circumference and the globe. The pedestal is made of enamel-inlaid gold and decorated with sea water patterns in relief. The four legs at the bottom are shaped like beast heads. A stand in the shape of nine coiling dragons is erected on top of the pedestal. The globe is joined together by two hemispheres, with inlaid pearls on the surface serving as stars. There are a total of 3,242 pearls in total. The names of stars are marked beside them, with shade lines interspersing among the stars indicating constellations. There are the horizontal circle and the meridian circle around the outer surface of the globe and the stem-branch circle at the top. A celestial globe is an ancient instrument for detecting the motion of heavenly bodies. This celestial globe is a model for adornment. It's made of precious materials, created with superb craftsmanship, and complicatedly structured. So much so, it can be called a rare treasure of the world. |
