Qing Dynasty The handled pot is made of gold of 70% fineness and can be regarded as something of relatively good purity. The overall shape of the pot is like a bottle gourd, with a round mouth and base. The whole body of the pot is engraved with cloud patterns. Against the cloud-pattern background, the motifs of "two dragons playing with the pearl" are engraved. The pot has a lid. Both the lid and the body are embedded with pearls and multicolored gems, such as rubies, turquoises, coral stones and lazurite stones, etc. The part close to the base is adorned with sea wave motifs. There's a beam connecting the spout to the body. The handle is shaped like a dragon and there's a gold chain connecting the lid to the handle.
The two techniques of engraving and embedding were adopted in the creation of the pot. The outlines of the engraved patterns are raised above the surface, with embedded pearls and multicolored gems accentuating the beauty. The handled pot was created in pair. They were imperial wine vessels used in banquets held in honor of the emperor and empress. |
