Qianlong Period, Qing Dynasty The opening of the conch is connected with a silver-based enamel case inlaid with precious stones. The case is lotus petal-shaped and has a cover on top. It is decorated with intertwining lotus branch patterns against the enamel ground and inlaid with rubies, niters, turquoises etc. There's a leather case to go with the conch and the inside of the case flip bears characters in Chinese, Manchu, Mongolian and Tibetan languages, reading "Panchen Erdini presented a precious stone-inlaid enamel conch on Oct. 28th of 1780, the 45th year of Emperor Qianlong's reign". The conch is a Buddhist instrument. This artwork, perfectly blending a natural conch with an enamel article, was a birth gift from the sixth Panchen Lama of Tibet to Emperor Qianlong for his 70th birthday. It is of special historical values. |
