Five Grottos in Tanyao was first carved in 460-465 AC. They were the first and most imposing grotto site in Yungang. A huge statue of Sakyamuni is found in the centre of each of the 5 grottoes. These 5 statues stand for the five emperors in the Northern Wei Dynasty. The statue of the sitting Sakyamuni in the 20th Grotto is acknowledged as the symbol of the whole Yungang Grottoes. The Buddha is 13.7m tall, huge and simple. It has thick shoulders, round face, thin lip, and nose with high bridge, exposing cassock (robe) at the right part of the body and looking solemn. The relieves of flame decorations, sitting Buddha and flying apsaras are so beautiful as to highlight the vigour and splendour of the Sakyamuni statue at the centre. |
