The grotto is approximately square in layout. At the centre stands a 15m tall double-tier square column that is connected to the roof. Below the column lies a big shrine where a sitting Buddha is carved in the south and a sitting Buddha leaning against the western wall; the statue of Sakyamuni and Prabhutaratna Buddha sitting face to face is carved in the north and the statue of a leg-crossed Maitreya is carved in the east. 33 relieves that depicts the stories of Sakyamuni from his birth to awakening are scattered along both sides of the shrine of the column, the eastern, southern and western walls of the grotto and both sides of the bright window. The grotto is imposing and finely decorated with skilful techniques. It is the one that best represents the Yungang Grottoes. |
