Appreciation of Dunhuang Fresco (Five Dynasties)
Painting of the Qing Dynasty |
Zha Shibiao excelled at landscapes; his brushes were sparse and light. Along with HongRen, Wang Zhirui and Sun Yi, he was a representative of the Xin'an school of painting. The work paints a water view of the region south of the Yangtze River. A farmer's hut, small hills and smoky willows near the water are surrounded by mist and are indistinct. A small bridge might be the only path connecting the farmer's hut with the outside world. The painter uses a large number of wet brushes and rich, light ink on relatively impermeable paper. What he achieved is a masterpiece said to be "significant in haziness". |
