The Monkey King
The Monkey King is the most beloved figure in Journey to the West, a Chinese Classic Novel. In the novel, the Monkey King was originally a monkey-shaped rock, which turned into a fairy monkey with the nurture of the quintessence of heaven and earth. He is so powerful and talented that he can change into 72 different forms, and do the somersault soaring through the mist and onto the clouds. With the intimidating kungfu, he once turned into a mess the heaven ruled by Great Emperor Jade and was later disciplined by the Buddha and became one of the four disciples of Monk Tang, responsible for the sacred mission of protecting his master on the road to seek True Sutra in the Western Buddhist Land. On the journey, they encountered 81 misfortunes, defeating lots of demons, spirits and even sirens, and finally won the True Sutra back, realizing their Buddhist Ideal.
In Journey to the West, the Monkey King is a very vivid and important character. He has the super power of a spirit, and is able to do unbelievable magic; meanwhile, he has the emotions of a human, knowing precisely whom or what to love or hate; moreover, he has the piety of a disciple, bearing a lot of pains on the road to seek Sutra, without shaking his decidedness and loyalty to convoy his master; still he has the natural character of a monkey, being impatient, fidgeting, mischievous, yet lovable. It is the combination of righteousness, braveness, faithfulness and naughtiness that makes the Monkey King a beloved household character and the symbol of the righteous power to fight all the monsters and evil forces.
