No era name had been set ever since the ancient times, when the years were counted in numeric sequence. During the reign of Emperor Wen, the way of adding "before, in the middle of, after" to numbers were adopted. In 140 B.C. when Liu Che, the Emperor Wu succeeded the throne, years were counted by adding the era name with numbers for auspiciousness. Therefore, the era name "Jian Yuan" was adopted for the first year of the reign of Emperor Wu. The initiation of era name is a reflection of a new royal idea. |
