These are the color-painted yu-blowing and se-playing figurines unearthed from Tomb No. 1 of the Mawangdui Site in Changsha. There are five pieces all together, ranging from 32.5 to 38 cm in height. The figurines are characterized by a low forehead and high nose, and all are in a sitting position. Two of them are blowing the yu (a type of ancient pipe instrument) and the other three are playing the se. The yu-blowing figurines have their thumbs sticking out, four other fingers joining together, and palms up. The yu pipes are made of bamboo slips. The se-playing figurines have their palms down, with five fingers of both hands slightly curved. The three se instruments are of the same size. |
