In 213 B.C., Emperor Qin Shihuang, the first emperor in China accepted Li Si's suggestion and ordered to burn the books. Therefore, many ancient books and records were burnt for good except The History of Qin Dynasty and books on medicine, divination and tree planting, among which the historical books of the six states including Han, Zhao, Wei, Chu, Yan and Qi suffered the most. The purpose of burning the books was to prohibit all heterodox thinking, which turned out to dissatisfy the scholars and led to the event of burying over 460 Confucian scholars alive in Xianyang City. |
