Ji Kang led a poor life, often making a living by forging iron with Xiang Xiu in the shade of trees. At that time, a childe named Zhong Hui was quite talented and eloquent, yet was looked down upon by Ji Kang. One day, Zhong Hui paid a visit to Ji Kang, but was ignored by the latter, who kept on doing his work. After staying for quite a while, Zhong Hui felt so bored and embarrassed that he was about to leave when Ji Kang suddenly uttered:

"For what I heard and for what I saw." Zhong Hui replied angrily.

With these words, Zhong Hui went off in a huff and bore the hatred towards Ji Kang from then on.
