The Traditional Chinese Remedy Preparation |
In the Jin Dynasty, Bao Gu, the daughter of the Nanhai prefecture chief in Guangdong, was also a noted woman doctor. Her husband was Ge Hong, a renowned alchemist at that time, who wrote famous medical works like the Handbook of Prescriptions for Emergency. The long-time imperceptible influence from her family laid a good foundation for her own medical practice. For quite a long time, she traveled with her husband around Luofu Mountain in Guangdong for alchemy and medicine practicing. She would cure disease for local people and therefore was honored as "Immortal Lady Bao" by the local. Bao Gu's disease treating and herb gathering tours took her to places like Guangzhou, Nanhai, Huiyang, Boluo etc. She had excellent medical skills and was scrupulous about every detail. She was expert in acupuncture and best known for tumor and wart treatment. She experimented with moxibustion treatment using mugwort floss made from red-rooted mugworts found everywhere at the foot of the Yuexiu Mountain. So, later generations also called her "Mugwort Lady Bao". After Bao Gu's death, the local people built a temple commemorating the great contribution she made to the medical world. The temple is inside the Sanyuan Palace at the foot of Yuexiu Mountain in Guangzhou. |
