It was finished during 1041 to 1048, when 56 rebels including Ou Xifan were executed under the order of the local government of Guangxi. The criminal prison official Wu Jian in Yizhou was ordered to anatomize the chest and abdomen of the dead. Then under scrupulous observation and discrimination, the data of dissection was painted into a collection The Five Internal Organs of Ou Xifan by painter Song Jing. Although there is no way to find the original version of it now, the historical fact has been recorded in many historical records and collections of the time and in later periods, especially the Truth-retaining Illustrations was painted afterwards, in which detailed records on the dissection were found.

Development of Figures of Viscera and Anatomy

Medical scientists in ancient China attached great importance to human anatomy and conducted researches on it. According to rich data found in Internal Canon of the Yellow Emperor (Huang Di Nei Jing) and Classic of Questioning (Nan Jing), the researches on anatomy by using corpses had began in as early as Warring States Period. Anthropotomy reached an all-time development during Northern Song Dynasty, when two large-scale autopsy practices were carried out successively and a lot more knowledge about autopsy was accumulated. Thus there emerged two collections of illustrations on anthropotomy
