The picture of Bird-watcher and Cicada-catcher, which is 1.68-meter high and 1.75-meter long, was unearthed in 1971 from the tomb of Li Xian, Zhanghuai Crown Prince of Tang Dynasty, in Qian County, Shaanxi Province. In the picture there are three maids of honor, one is chubby-faced with hair up in a bun. Dressed in yellow, she held a gray shawl in crossed arms with her eyes slightly open in silent meditation. The maid in the middle wears a man's garment and sandals with a twin spiral bun. With light steps, she is raising her right hand catching a cicada on a branch with full attention. The third maid holds one end of a red shawl in her left hand, with the right hand touching her gold hairpin and her eyes following the birds in the sky. The picture presents a mix of motion and quietness manifested by people, birds and trees. It has enjoyed an eminent position in the history of fine arts in ancient China with its admiring artistic conception.
