The Chinese version of the saying goes like this: "the mantis stalks the cicada, unaware of the oriole behind". We can find its origin in an allegory. It's said that during Spring and Autumn Period, when the king of Wu was determined to attack Chu State, a lad cautioned him against coveting immediate interests regardless of hidden troubles with the story of "the mantis stalks the cicada, unaware of the oriole behind". The king then accepted it and gave up his own idea. The idiom is used to compare the situation that the shortsighted ones always plan to frame others, unaware of themselves being in danger, or those coveting foreseeable profits unaware of hidden trouble behind. |
