Tea contest is an activity about tea originated in the Tang Dynasty. Every spring when new tea are made, the tea growers and drinkers would compete whose tea is better. In the Song Dynasty when people are having a tea contest, they would scoop some processed tea leaves in the cup and pour into some boiled water. The bubble color on the surface of tea and its evenness is one of the measuring standards, while the other is to see whether there is watermark at the junction of the inner rim of the cup and the bubbles. The bubbles will retreat after a while, when there will appear a circle of watermark in the inner rim of the cup, and the one that first appear will announce failure of the tea contest. |
