In order to find out the life habits of pangolins, Li Shizhen followed hunters into remote mountains and forests to anatomize the mammal and found that its stomach was full of indigested ants. He had another finding that pangolin did not lure ants by its squama but through tongue thrust. He revised the false recordation about this on old pharmacopoeias and collected pangolin’s healing properties from the folks.
