In China's Shaanxi area, there's a popular marriage custom called "hanging up tiger buns". Before the bride arrives at the bridegroom's home, a maternal-line uncle of the bridegroom's prepares a pair of tiger-shaped steamed buns and ties them up with a red rope. When the bride arrives, the uncle hangs the buns around the neck of the bride. After she enters the door, the buns will be jointly distributed by the bride and bridegroom to people at the scene, symbolizing the two hearts of the couple will be tied together forever. Interestingly, the buns are made male and female, with the male one bearing a "Íõ"-shaped mark on the tiger's head, symbolizing the man is the master of the family, and the female one bearing a pair of flying birds on the tiger's head, symbolizing the wife flying with the husband. And there's a young cub before each tiger, symbolizing the wish for having children soon. |
